# How to prepare your first clothing collection

A practical sequence for turning an early clothing idea into a focused collection brief before contacting manufacturers.

## Start with one customer and one use case

A collection brief begins with a person and a situation. Describe who will wear the product, when they will wear it and what matters most to them. A relaxed everyday T-shirt and a close-fitting training top ask different questions of a manufacturer. Write the use case in a few sentences before choosing fabrics or making a long list of styles.

Then identify the feature you want the wearer to notice: a particular silhouette, a useful pocket, a texture or a finish. This helps you make consistent decisions when references point in different directions. Keep inspiration images, but explain what each one demonstrates instead of asking a factory to copy an entire image.

## Build a range you can explain clearly

Give each proposed style a short name and identifier. List the intended colours and size range beside it, then record which materials or trims could be shared. Treat every variation as a decision that needs to be sourced, developed and checked.

For a hypothetical first range, you might explore a single T-shirt in two colours before adding a second fit. That is a planning example, not a universal order recommendation. Ask manufacturers what quantities and colour splits work with their process, and use those replies to adjust the range rather than assuming every combination is feasible.

## Create a decision sheet before a tech pack

For each style, record the product description, reference images, intended material, fit direction, branding and open questions. Separate firm requirements from preferences. If a fabric is flexible but the silhouette is essential, say so.

Add the development support you need. A supplier should be able to tell whether you are bringing approved patterns or asking it to develop a garment from an idea. If technical details are missing, ask what information is needed for an initial estimate and what is required for a production quote.

## Set a review point before committing to bulk

Plan to assess samples, scope and quotation together. Keep room in the schedule for feedback and another sample if needed. Do not treat a first prototype as a production reference when the materials or construction are still provisional.
