# How to review a clothing sample before production

A structured sample review covering version control, measurements, fit, construction and clear feedback for your manufacturer.

## Identify exactly what you are reviewing

Record the style code, sample size, date received and revision. Ask whether the sample uses the intended bulk fabric and trims. If anything is substituted, note it before making comments about feel, fit or finish.

Agree on the purpose of the review. A prototype built to explore shape should not automatically become approval of colour or production materials. Keep previous comments beside you and mark which have been resolved, which remain open and which new issues have appeared.

## Measure consistently, then check fit

Use the agreed measurement points and lay the garment out consistently. Record the measurement you observe beside the target rather than writing only “too large” or “too short”. Photograph the measuring position where an interpretation could differ.

Next, assess fit on an appropriate wearer or form and note the relevant size information. Ask the wearer to move as the product is intended to be used. Separate a numerical measurement issue from a preference about silhouette; they can lead to different corrections in the pattern.

## Review details in a fixed order

Work through the garment from top to bottom: neckline or collar, shoulders, sleeves, body, pockets, closures and hem. Then check labels, artwork and packing if those are included in the sample stage. Compare symmetrical features and look at the inside as well as the outside.

If washing is part of the agreed review, record the method used and compare the garment before and after. Avoid mixing observations from different samples without identifying them. When you request a change, describe the desired result and ask the manufacturer to confirm the proposed correction where needed.

## Send one actionable feedback document

Group comments under fit, construction, materials and branding. Number them, link each one to a photograph or drawing and indicate whether it is a correction or a new design request. Consolidate feedback from everyone involved before sending it.

End the document with the status: further development needed, another sample requested, or approved for a specifically stated stage. List any exceptions and ask the supplier to acknowledge them. Retain the approved reference and files so that bulk production is based on a shared record rather than an informal message about one detail.
